Clare Crerand, her husband Andy and their children, 7 year old Grace and 10 year old Benjamin were treated to a weekend break at Calvert Trust Kielder – a charity that aims to challenge disability through outdoor adventure.
Clare, from Chester won the competition when she visited the Kids Up North exhibition at the NEC Birmingham in November, where TLW Solicitors of North Shields sponsored the Calvert Trust Kielder stand. The exhibition is aimed at the families of children with disabilities and special needs, as well as their carers and the professionals who support them.
Mum of two, Clare said:
“I went along to Kids up North to get more information on activities that my son Ben and the rest of our family could get involved in. Ben has a condition called Hemiplegia which is a type of Cerebral Palsy; meaning certain physical activities can be difficult for him. Ben adores sports and he’s a keen footballer, loves athletics and taking part in after school clubs with friends but we are limited and have to pick and choose what is on the curriculum.
“The Calvert Trust Kielder stand was the first one I visited, I was so shocked and delighted to win, and the chance for the whole of the family to take part in the wide range of activities and facilities on offer at Calvert is just amazing, we enjoyed an activity packed weekend including Sailing, Swimming, Climbing and Clay Pigeon shooting”.
TLW Solicitors teamed up with the Trust to offer one winner the chance to spend three nights in a four star Scandinavian style chalet at the centre – and take lucky guests along too.
Mrs Crerands said:
“As a family we love a trip to the great outdoors but this can sometimes be a problem due to accessibility. It was great boost to Ben’s confidence to be able to take part in what are usually restricted activities. Ben was initially quite hesitant about the climbing wall but with the fantastic team at Calvert helping there was no stopping him as he proudly reached the top!”
Peter Mckenna of TLW Solicitors said:
“We had a lot of interest in the competition. The activities Calvert Trust Kielder arranges are amazing – everything from sailing and climbing to archery and high ropes”. It means people can take part in activities they never thought possible, safe in the knowledge that Trust staff are there to encourage and support them all the way. We’re delighted to support Calvert Trust Kielder with the valuable work it does and the help it gives so many people – and we’re pleased Clare, Andy, Grace and Ben had a great time.”
