The BBC’s Inside Out programme hosted by North East reporter, Chris Jackson recently featured interviews with several people who had been mis-sold solar panels, together with the complex loan agreements to pay for them.

BBC reporter Mike Parr explored individual cases where members of the public had been promised they would save money by installing solar panels – they were told they would get free electricity for their own homes and also make money by feeding surplus electricity back into the National Grid. The report highlighted that unfortunately neither of these assurances turned out to be true and the returns were not even enough to cover the loan repayments.
The companies behind these loans, including Barclays Bank, have tried to deflect responsibility and some of the solar panel companies have since gone out of business. Barclays has set aside over £38 million to deal with potential compensation claims, including solar panels.
