Monzo bank transfer and Authorised Push Payment (APP) scams

Bank transfer fraud, specifically Authorised Push Payment (APP) fraud, is a very common crime resulting in unsuspecting victims losing significant amounts of money to online fraudsters.

APP scammers use social engineering techniques, including lies, impersonation, interception, and manipulation, to convince victims to ‘authorise’ the transfer of funds from their own bank accounts to an account in the scammer’s hands.

Believing a transaction to be genuine, money can be lost to:

  • Impersonation scams – where the scammer claims to be from a professional adviser such as a lawyer or accountant, or from a trusted company, such as a utility company, HMRC or even the person’s bank.
  • Romance scams – the scammer poses as someone looking for love on an online dating site or App, but soon asks for money for travel or health ‘emergencies’, promising to return it after payday.
  • Cryptocurrency scams – where promises of high rates of return lure people in to open crypto wallets.
  • Investment scams – social media advertising or celebrity endorsement is used to promote fake investments with what turn out to be ‘too good to be true’ results.

Some people are unfortunate to lose money through APP fraud even when they are looking for a job or moving house.

There are examples of APP fraud affecting Monzo Bank customers – Mr E lost £21,000 after seeing an online advert for a cryptocurrency investment. He was a Monzo bank customer and had moved the money to an existing cryptocurrency wallet held in his name.

Initially Monzo refused to reimburse Mr E, saying he had moved his money before the scam unfolded, but the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS), who carried out an independent investigation of the dispute between Mr E and Monzo, said Monzo should have done more to monitor any change of behaviour on his account and intervene when a third payment had been made within a short space of time. Monzo was held jointly liable for Mr E’s losses and ordered to refund half the lost money.
